Kitchen Remodeling | When thinking about a kitchen remodel, most of us like to dream big and try to go with it. Unfortunately, many get caught up daydreaming and end up in a nightmare when mistakes start popping up here and there. Don’t let that happen to you! There are plenty of mistakes to avoid when remodeling your kitchen but these are the top ones you should avoid.

1 – Squeezing in everything you can think of

It happens even to the best of us – when remodeling, we try to cover as many items on our wishlist as possible.  This is especially true when renovating a kitchen, the heart of any home. We try to install islands, lots of cabinets and shelves, a huge countertop – you get it. And while it’d be great to have all that, perhaps your home can take it all.

What you need to do is think hard about what you really need and sacrifice some things that won’t fit in your new kitchen’s layout. It can be painful, we know, but it’s best to have enough room to move around and be comfortable when cooking than having to squeeze yourself in when trying to cook a meal.

2 – Forgetting about your cooking habits

Yes, you want your kitchen to look astonishing and be the reason why all of your friends want to come over. But don’t let that distract you from what’s truly important – you need a functional kitchen! In other words, choose functionality over aesthetics, always (you can make them work together almost always, TBH).

So, when planning the remodel, think about use and how you’ll feel with the layout of your new kitchen.  Don’t you ever forget about the most critical point of any kitchen – the work triangle. What’s that? The triangle made by the sink, stove and refrigerator. These are the busiest areas and you have to make sure they are efficiently located in relation to one another. Don’t have a clue about how to do that? Ask your kitchen contractor!

3 – Spending way too much

We’d all live in mansions if it were up to us. That’s the main though many of us have when remodeling – go big and bet on luxury. Well, unless you definitely have the money and don’t care to spend it, then think again. Major kitchen remodels don’t have a decent ROI (they recoup less than 70% of their value upon sale) so be warned.

Perhaps you want the luxurious kitchen and don’t care about ROI. It’s OK. As long as you know that a kitchen remodel isn’t adding much value to your home, you can as big as you want. But always remember that you should choose so only when you’re planning to stay on that home.

4 – Picking your appliances at the last possible minute

Remodeling a kitchen is a very busy (and even stressful) project. There are tons of details to think about and everyone is as important as the next one. That’s so many people end up making this mistake – choosing the appliances once the kitchen is almost done. Don’t do it yourself – we’ll tell you why.

Appliances are a big deal in any kitchen and can make or break them. It’s not just a matter of dimensions – it’s a matter of aesthetics as well. It’s way easier to find cabinets and countertops to fit the appliances you’ve picked than the other way around. So, before doing anything, at least have in mind which appliances are you gonna get (or if you’re keeping the ones you already got). This way, the whole remodeling thing will be smoother for everybody involved – especially you.

5 – Forgetting about proper ventilation

It’s unlikely that you’d  forget about ventilation per se. But ventilating isn’t precisely the same thing as properly ventilating. If your ventilation system isn’t properly installed or it’s insufficient, then you’ll have water and carbon monoxide flying around your new kitchen. Water will lead to mold and mildew. Carbon monoxide will out you and your family at risk.

A major renovation in your kitchen should always think about ventilation as an integral part of the project. Be sure to have a system big enough to attend your needs and that lead outdoors to prevent those emissions from harming you and your home.

The only way your dream kitchen can become a reality is if you truly put your mind to work and think about all of the details. Planning goes a long way and it’ll prevent your kitchen remodel from turning into a nightmare. Remember – it’s best to be patient and have all the bases covered than rush into something you’ll regret sooner rather than later. – Treeium
